• 2 0 SOIL EXCAVATION
21 Excavation and Segregation of Impacted Soil
The soil to three locations within the SSA site were known or suspected to contain
petroleum hydrocarbons. These have been identified as the north and south pits (former UST
locations), and the former diesel fuel dispenser island area. The activities conducted at these
locations are described in the following sections.
2.1.1 Excavation of Former Underground Storage Tank Locations
In January 1993, MARK conducted soil excavation at the north and south pits. Soil was
excavated using a Catapillar EL 200B excavator and segregated into two stockpiles One pile
contained impacted soil for treatment and the second pile contained clean soil for possible use
as backfill. Each pile was underlain and covered with industrial 6-mil plastic sheeting. Soil
? segregation was accomplished by field screening and confirmation sampling and analysis Field
monitoring procedures used to segregate the soil are described in Section 2 3. Details regarding
construction of the soil treatment pile are discussed in Section 3 1
A combined total of approximately 1,400 cubic yards (cy) In place volume of soil was
removed from the two excavations The final dimensions of the north excavation were
approximately 25 feet (ft) x 40 ft x 33 ft deep and the south excavation dimensions were
approximately 20 ft x 15 ft x 12 ft deep Approximately 1,000 cy bulk volume of impacted soil
was segregated for remediation The remaining 400 cy of soil was used as backfill material The
pit locations are shown in Drawing 1-2
FASCLOSE 2 2-1 92-1177102 36
