(AGE) for the above referenced site.
In a letter dated June 6, 2002, EHD agreed with the AGE recommendation for a
deep soil boring in the former UST area with collection of water samples todeflne
the vertical extent of the hydrocarbon impact to ground water. This
recommendation was proposed again in the Fourth Quarter 2002 report. EHD
agreed with the recommendation of a boring because it would allow for collection
of ground water samples from more than one permeable zone if determined
necessary.
The Site Assessment Work Plan, however, proposes to install a depth-discrete
ground water monitoring well (screen interval from 45 to 50 feet below surface
grade): The boring logs from previous investigations at the site show fine-
grained material to a depth of 26 feet and sand from 26 to 30 feet below surface
grade (bsg). None of the investigations at this site have been beyond 30 feet
bsg, so the lithology beneath this depth is unknown at this site. The monitoring
well screen interval must be placed in a zone of permeable material. The work
plan must reflect this, not propose placement of the well screen at an arbitrary
depth of unknown lithology.
The September 2002 Site Assessment Work Plan is not approved. Please
submit a work plan for a deep soil boring as proposed in quarterly reports or
construction of a monitoring well that will be based on site lithology beneath 30
feet and will be screened in the next permeable zone by February 5, 2003.
1
