state of California Department of Health Services
Memorandum
James L. Tjosvold, 19 August 1988
TO Senior Waste Management Engineer Date
2041 Navy Dr.
Subject: Workplan
From Lee Taubeneck
Associate Waste Management Engineer
I have reviewed the Workplan for the installation of two
additional wells at the subject facility. The wells will be
installed by the dual-tube percussion method of drilling.
This method will effectively seal off shallow groundwater-
bearing zones from deeper groundwater bearing zones.
The two wells will be paired with existing wells screened at
more shallow intervals . Over time, this will allow for an
analysis of the vertical groundwater flow component. One
well will be sited downgradient of the sources of
groundwater contamination (south etching room, western
sidewalk, and chemical storage yard sump) , and one well will
be sited upgradient.
To allow for better groundwater quality samples a
gradational analysis will be performed prior to determining
the screen size and filterpack material . Soils will be
classified at depths greater than 30 ' (bgs) . Soil samples
will also be collected for sieve analysis below this depth.
The monitoring portion of the workplan is specified as
agreed to in the Conference Call of 7 July (cf. staff letter
to Christopher Vais dated 21 July) . There is however past
evidence of shallow groundwater contamination by nickel and
copper. These analytes should be added to the list of
chemicals to be screened in the first round of "deep"
groundwater sampling.
Recommendation
The Task I portion of the workplan appears sound. Task II
should be modified to include the two additional analytes
nickel and copper.
