4.5 Deep Soil Boring
A deep soil boring(P1)was drilled under the base of the existing septic pit in the southeastern
corner of the motel property by V&W Drilling Inc. (V&W)under PHSEHD permit using a
Geoprobe on May 3,2006. The soil boring was inclined to a 30%angle from vertical so as to
intercept the base of the septic pit at a distance of about 1 foot below the base of the pit.
Continuous core plastic sleeves were used to collect a sample. A Mini-Rae 2000 photo
ionization device(PID)was used to monitor soil gas for volatile organic compounds. All
readings on the PID were in the range of 0 to 2 ppmv which is considered as background.
The soil column penetrated was comprised entirely of brown silty clay that was moist. Gravel
clasts were recovered that indicated that the gravel pack of the base of the septic disposal pit had
been countered at a depth of 25 feet vertical bgs. Immediately after drilling out of the gravel
clasts a single soil sample(P1-26 ) was collected using the continuous core system by the
geoprobe. This sample was placed on ice in accordance with the workplan until the
GeoAnalytical personnel took possession of the sample under chain of custody procedures.
The following constituents were reported to be present from GeoAnalytical Laboratories Report
#S6E0309 from soil sample P 1-26.
Analyte Method Reporting Limit Analytical Result
Iodine USEPA 345.1M 2 mg/kg Below analytical method
detection limit
pH USEPA 9045 NA 8.1 units
Chloride USEPA 300.0 10 mg/kg 14 mg/kg
Motor Oil USEPA 8015M 10 mg/kg Below analytical method
detection limits
Diesel USEPA 8015M 1 mg/kg Below analytical method
detection limits
Kerosene USEPA 8015M 1 mg/kg Below analytical method
detection limits
Gasoline USEPA 8015M 1 mg/kg Below analytical method
detection limits Analytical
A full-scan USEPA Test Method 8260B analysis of soil sample L2-13.0 was reported to contain
below analytical method detection limits for all analytes. None of these concentrations were
found to be considered as hazardous waste under definition of California or federal definitions.
Main\Environmental\St.FrancisMoteNteport\Report05252006.wpd 16
