Mr' Jeff Whitworth - 3 - 2 August 2006
confirmation sampling and suite of chemical analyses for Regional Water Board approval. For
future reference, the Soil Removal Plan states that Water Quality Objectives (WQOs)
established by the Regional Water Board for BTEX compounds are equivalent to California
Department of Health Services (DHS) Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs). This is not
necessarily the case for all of these compounds as the WQO for benzene is the OEHHA
Public Health Goal (PHG) for drinking water of 0.15 micrograms per liter (pg/L) based on
cancer risk and not the DHS MCL of 1 pg/L.
SAIC on behalf of Shell has indicated that the soil remediation work is required to be
completed by 1 October 2006 and that soil gas sampling will follow. Based on this schedule.
the report for the proposed soil remediation and investigation activities is due to this office by
30 November 2006.
If you have any questions regarding this letter, you may contact me at (916) 464-4719 or
mclardy@waterboards.ca.gov.
Mark W.
