Joe Lentini - 2 - 11 August 2010
Shell Mountain House
The Second QMR describes groundwater sampling conducted for a fourth consecutive quarter
in June 2010. Depth to static groundwater ranged from about 27 to 36 feet bgs. Groundwater
flow generally varied between the northwest and northeast at gradients that ranged from 0.002
to 0.006. Groundwater samples were submitted for laboratory analysis of TPH as diesel
(TPHd), TPH as crude (TPHc), BTEX, and naphthalene. No TPHc, TPHd, BTEX or
naphthalene was detected in any of the groundwater samples obtained from Neighborhood B.
There were a few TPHd detections in Neighborhoods C and D that were below the water
quality objective of 100 micrograms per liter (Ng/L). Overall, the second quarter monitoring
results were consistent with results observed in previous quarters.
Soil vapor well SVP-1 was sampled during the week of 12 July 2010. Results will be provided
in the third quarter monitoring report.
Our comment is presented below.
The monitoring results observed over the past four quarters indicate that it is appropriate to
contemplate no further action (NFA) for the Site. Therefore, please submit the results of the
SVP-1 monitoring in the Third QMR. If the results of vapor sampling are ND and third quarter
groundwater monitoring results are consistent with previous quarters, Shell may submit an
NFA Report. This Report must include summary tables of all soil, soil gas, and groundwater
data generated for the Site and the rationale for the NFA request. Staff will review this Report
and determine if NFA status may be granted.
If you have any questions regarding this letter, you may contact me at (916) 464-4665 or by
email at betaylor@wate[46ards.ca.gov.
BRIAN TAYLOR, G.
Engineering Geologist
cc: Mr. Jeff Gaarder, Conestoga-Rovers & Associates, Sonoma
Mr. Mike Infurna, San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department, Stockton
Mr. Manuel Oliveira, Escalon
Ms. Joanne Kimbrough, Tracy
Mr. Nader Shareghi, Mountain House Community Services District, Mountain House
Mr. David Wood, Murphys
