KLEINFELDER
r
3 FIELD ACTIVITIES
3 1 WATER LEVEL MEASUREMENTS
On June 2, 1989, ground water depths were measured in seven monitoring wells at the
Unocal site located at the Port of Stockton. In addition, water depths were measured in
three wells at ST Services (Union Pacific) south of Unocal; in four wells at South Pacific
Pipelines (SPPL) north of Unocal, and in 19 piezometers along Stork Road (east of
Unocal) and Navy Drive (west of Unocal) Monitoring well and piezometer locations are
shown on Plate 3
In an effort to assess the potential influence of tidal fluctuations on the ground water
gradient, water levels were measured in the wells and piezometers over a 12-hour period
Water level measurement protocol was as follows-
1 All wells and piezometers were unlocked and caps removed The wells were
allowed to equilibrate with the atmosphere for at least one hour
2 During the first round of water level measurements, the thickness of floating
product, if any, was measured at each location Measurements of depth-to-
product and depth-to-water were made with a combination of steel tape and
conductivity-based water level indicator A correction factor was calculated
so that subsequent measurements with the steel tape could be correlated
with measurements taken with the conductivity-based water level meter
3 A conductivity-based water level probe was used during subsequent
measurements to measure water levels in wells and piezometers that did not
contain floating product The steel tape was used in piezometers that did
- have visible floating product Depth-to-water was measured from the north
rim of the PVC well casing The steel tape and conductivity probe were
rinsed with TSP and distilled water before and after each measurement
Water depths were converted to elevations above mean sea level using surveyed casing
elevations The four independent well surveys (Unocal, SPPL, ST Services, and the
piezometers along Stork Road and Navy Drive) were tied together by a licensed surveyor
194-89-1112 5
