The
intent of this letter is to address a issues raised during ubandonment activities and
presented in your 1 3, 1998 1 er to Gail Wiggett of the Central Valley Regional
Water Quality Control Board.
i
METHODS f
EMCON contracted Water Development Corporation, a licensed California drilling
contractor to perform well abandorunent activities. A video log of the well conducted on
September 3, 1997, shows the will casing was in poor condition with numerous
corrosion holes present and that the I urrent depth of the well was approximately 55 feet
below ground surface(bgs).
During the well abandonment, the trmie pipe was placed through the center of the well
casing to a depth of approximately 5 feet. The tremie pipe encountered an obstruction at
this depth, consistent with the obstIliction depth identified in the video log. Four cubic
yards(8 10 gallons)of neat cement grout were pumped through the tremie pipe starting at
2:35 P.M. The calculated grout voltime to fill the borehole was 323 gallons. Placement
of this batch of grout ended at 3:00 O.M. At this time, the grout level was measured. A
firm grout tag indicated the grout lev161 was 10 feet bgs and the tremie pipe was pulled up
to confirm. The grout level on the trImie showed that the grout was present at 5 feet bgs
(consistent with Section 4.7.4 of the!PHS/EHD Well Standard). Thus, the weighted tape
passed through the upper 5 feet of the grout column. The tremie pipe was removed from
the hole and the well casing was puled. Approximately 44 feet of casing were removed.
SACW.TJ010C42WC4200126Ar-98'cbell:1 I R",0,nine 12.1998
i
I
