IY
WORK PLAN: PHASE
PETROLEUM STORAGE IANDBHANDL NGSURFACE ITERMINALTION ENFtERI SERvHc STN
PORT OF STOCKTON
STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA
Gentlemen:
Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC) is pleased to present this work plan
for a Phase II Subsurface Investigation in the petroleum storage and
handling terminal area at the Port of Stockton. The investigation for
Phase I included an evaluation of the hydrogeologic setting and a review of
the history of the petroleum terminal. Based on the results of the Phase I
investigation, we have developed a scope of services associated with the
proposed Phase II investigation.
BACKGROUND
WCC performed a field investigation in January and February 1987, to
evaluate the hydrogeologic setting in the petroleum terminal area. Thir-
ty-two piezometers were installed along the perimeter of the terminal area
to characterize the groundwater flow direction beneath the site. Based on
measurements obtained on January 28 and February 12, 1987, the depth to
groundwater is approximately 6 to 8 feet below grade and groundwater
flows across the site from the northwest to the southeast. A groundwater
mound was detected in the vicinity of piezometers P11 and P12 (Figure 1)
which appeared to be associated with an unlined pond at this location.
Evidence of petroleum hydrocarbons was noted in piezometers P11 through
P17 (southeast boundary) and P29 and P30 (northwest boundary) .
The Phase I investigation also included a records search to identify exist-
ing wells or piezometers which could be used to measure water levels (none
were found). In addition, available information from various regulatory
agencies was reviewed. Our review of the available information indicated
that the petroleum terminal area has experienced several incidents
involving various types of petroleum hydrocarbon constituents.
Consulting Engineers.Geologists '
and Environmental$cientsis
Offices in Other Principal Cites `. +
