LEVINE•FRICKE
peak retention times.
Estimated Relative Acre of the Samples.
The high concentrations of organic lead in the hydrocarbon
samples indicates that the samples have not been weathered and
' are relatively fresh and are probably less than a few months old
(personal communication, Andrew Friedman, FFB) . Weathering of
the gasoline would have resulted in a significant decrease in the
' organic lead concentrations.
Aging (weathering) of gasoline also results in the loss of its
volatile components as well as polymerization and subsequent
hydroxylation of the heavier end. Analysis of aged gasoline
samples by GC results in lower peak areas for the front ends of
the chromatogram and a continuous increasing drift in the base-
line of the back end of the chromatogram due to the formation of
weak dimerized derivatives such as fatty acids. However, none of
these phenomena were observed in the samples analyzed for this
investigation. The high relative concentrations of volatile con-
stituents in the hydrocarbon samples indicates that the hydrocar-
bons are very fresh, probably on the order of less than a few
months (personal communication, Jerry Martin, CESC) .
' However, the rate at which gasoline and other fuels age will vary
with soil depth, mineral composition (catalytic activity) , tem-
perature, biodegradation, and exposure to atmospheric conditions.
These factors make an exact aging of the gasoline impossible and
result in the more qualitative aging assessment.
PRODUCT MOVEMENT
' SPPL transports regular leaded gasoline, diesel fuel, JP-4, and a
variety of unleaded gasolines through its pipelines. Recent
product movement records for the three pipelines investigated,
' Time Oil pipeline (LS-44) , Mobil and Shell pipeline (LS-45) , and
the main pipeline from the Concord terminal (LS-62) , were evalu-
ated to assess the relative percentages of various fuels carried
through each pipeline. These results are presented in Table 3 .
The Table 3 data suggest that product recently originating from a
leak from any of the three pipelines would be predominantly
unleaded gasoline. Unleaded gasoline comprised between 46 and
65% of fuel shipments through the pipelines over the week prior
to shutdown of the pipelines and 42 to 63% over the previous
' 3-1/2 weeks prior to shutdown of the pipelines. Fuel character-
ization and organic lead analyses indicate that the fuel at each
of the three locations was 90 to 95% leaded gasoline with only 5
to 10% diesel.
