Box 4848
Anaheim, California 92803
Attention: Mr. Chuck Kolesar
Dear Mr. Kolesar:
Installation of Ejector Systems Pumps
and Startup of Extraction Wells MW-23 and MW-24
Shell Oil Distribution Plant
Stockton, California
Harding Lawson Associates(HLA) is pleased to submit this report documenting the installation and
startup of two Ejector Systems total fluids pumps in new Extraction Wells MW-23 and MW-24 at the
Shell Oil Company Distribution Plant, 3515 Navy Drive, Rough and Ready Island, Stockton, California
(Plate 1). HLA's services included the installation of two Ejector Systems Total Fluids air-
displacement pumps in Wells MW-23 and MW-24, hookup of the new pumps to the existing Extraction
Well MW-1 control panel, startup and balancing of the three well system, and performance of short
duration single-well performance tests on Wells MW-23 and MW-24. The following discusses the
pump system installation, operation, and testing.
Pump System Installation and Operation
On February 17 and 18, 1993, Ejector Systems Total Fluids Pumps were installed in wells MW-23 and
MW-24(Plate 1). Well MW-23 was installed during August 1991 and is completed to a depth of 32.5
feet below ground surface(bgs)and is screened from 7 to 32 feet bgs. Well MW-24 was installed
during December 1992 and is completed to a depth of 39 feet below ground surface(bgs) and is
screened from 18.5 to 39 feet bgs. The bottom of each pump was set near the bottom of each well.
The pumping systems consist of the displacement pumps, a compressed air supply, Bellows liquid level
control/vent valves, a control panel that allows regulation of pump discharge, a totalizer flow meter
used to record the total volume of groundwater extracted, and a discharge line from the pumps to an
onsite Fluidized Bed Biological Reactor(FBBR) treatment system. All treated groundwater is
currently stored onsite in a holding tank pending issuance of a NPDES permit by the Regional Board.
Aquifer Testine
On February 19, 1993, single-well pumping and recovery tests were performed on Wells MW-23 and
MW-24. The data obtained from these tests were used to estimate the aquifer transmissivity and
hydraulic conductivity in the vicinity of the two new extraction wells. Water-level drawdown and
recovery in the wells were continuously monitored using InSitu pressure transducers and dataloggers.
Engineering and 7655 Red mod Boulevard, P.O.
