• INTRODUCTION
This report summarizes the field activities performed at 25650 Highway 99
North in Acampo, California (Figure 1) during the recent removal of the
underground storage tanks (USTs). Removal and excavation activities were
performed by Golden West Builders of Livermore, California. Touchstone
Developments (TD) was present on-site to observe the UST removal and soil
stockpiling. The soil sampling and analysis described in this report were
performed December 15, 1993 and December 17, 1993 to comply with the
current San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health guide-
lines.
SITE DESCRIPTION
The site is occupied by Chevron Service Station number 9-2396. Two USTs were
removed prior to these field activities on August 25, 1993. A 550 gallon waste
oil tank located north of the station building, and one 550 gallon heating oil tank
located east of the building (Touchstone Developments Tank Removal Report
dated September 20, 1993). For this phase of work four USTs were removed on
December 15, 1993. One 10,000 gallon single walled steel tank, two 6000 gallon
single walled steel tanks, and one 3000 gallon single walled steel tank (Figure 1).
All tanks formerly contained unleaded gasoline.
FIELD EXCAVATION ACTIVITIES
UST removal was witnessed by Enc W.Trevena,Senior Registered Environmental
Health Specialist from San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental
Health Division, Steve Dalton from the San Joaquin County Fire Prevention
Bureau, and Brett Hunter from Chevron U.S.A.
The tanks were transported under manifest and disposed of by Erickson Inc.,
Richmond, California. Approximately 200 cubic yards of soil were removed and
stockpiled on site during UST removal and excavation. All tanks appeared to be
in good condition; no holes were observed.
Approximately 1000 cubic yards of soil were excavated and stockpiled on-site
following UST removal to facilitate the installation of new tanks.
SOIL SAMPLING
Excavation and product line soil samples were taken from the excavator bucket
by removing the top few inches of soil and pushing a clean, six-inch-long (two
inches in diameter) brass sample tube into the soil until completely full. The ends
of the tubes were covered with aluminum foil and sealed with plastic end caps.
The samples were then labeled, placed in a cooler with ice, entered on a Cham-
