(LPR)has prepared
this letter to clarify the field procedures for the upcoming plume Perimeter cone penetraniOur
testing/push-in polyvinyl chloride piezometer (CPT/PIPP) investigation in the B-zone aquifer. As
presented previously in our September 26, 1997 letter, and as discussed during our October 7,
1997 teleconference, LFR will use CPT/PIPP technology to investigate the A-zone aquifer. the A/B
aquitard, and the upper portion of the B-zone aquifer at four locations at Lincoln Center_ Specific
points of clarification are listed below.
The work will be performed using the same methods and proced"eS that were used during the
downgradiew CPT/PIPP investigation. The CPT/PIPP borings will be advanced to a depth of
approximately 120 feet below ground surface (bgs): if a permeable sand layer is present at or
near 120 feet bgs, the borings will be continued until the base of the permeable layer is
encountered and an underlying low permeability layer is identified, or until the pusbiug
capability of the CPT rig is exceeded.
A soil sample will be collected from the less permeable sediment located between the A- and
B-zone aquifers using a piston-type sampler developed for the CPT rig. The soil sample will be
collected in place of a water sample at that interval. A description of the soil compounds e is attached (Attachment 1). The soil samples will be analyzed for volatile organic
(VOCs) using EPA Method 8260A.
14000 Powell Street, 12th Floor, Emeryville, California 94608-1,27 • (510) 662.4900 • ru(510) 652-2246 • Ofllees Woddwido
