SUR
limit (Figure 4). Due to the static PCE concentrations observed in the A-zone and B-zone aquifer
within the vicinity of the Bank of Stockton, LFR proposes to utilize data collected from the
proposed MIP investigation to assist in designing and implementing an enhanced bioremediation
pilot study of chlorinated solvents through anaerobic degradation of PCE in this area.
The capabilities of the MIP technology were demonstrated previously in the Historical Source Area
of the Site by advancing 15 test borings, which were advanced by Vironex and Precision under the
supervision of LFR staff. This work was also observed by Ms. Marie McCrink of the RWQCB and
Mr. Mike Infurna of San Joaquin County Environmental Health. Overall, the MIP detector was
able to detect the presence of chlorinated solvents in the Historical Source Area and to assess their
vertical distribution.
The following sections describe investigation objectives; a scope of work; and data analysis,
reporting, and schedule for the completion of the focused MIP investigation.
MIP Investigation Objectives
Field applications of lactate injection remediation technology by LFR and others have shown that
effective lactate delivery is key to successful implementation and achievement of performance
goals. The purpose of the focused MIP investigation proposed in this work plan is to aid in the
design of an effective lactate injection delivery system by assessing the extent of the permeable
sediments and of the chlorinated solvents in the vicinity of the Bank of Stockton. The investigation
will involve the simultaneous collection of MIP data and electrical conductivity (EC) or cone
penetration testing (CPT) data and will yield both relative chlorinated solvent concentration and
lithological data to better define and more accurately assess affected sediments within vicinity of
the Bank of Stockton. The overall objectives of the MIP investigation are:
• to assess the vertical and lateral extent of the relatively higher concentrations of chlorinated
solvents in and adjacent to the area near the Bank of Stockton, using MIP technology
• to simultaneously collect EC or CPT data to obtain detailed lithological data
• to collect five grab groundwater samples to calibrate and validate the MIP data
to use the MIP and EC/CPT data together to identify lithologic zones that are preferentially
affected by relatively elevated chlorinated solvent concentrations. Investigation results will be
used to design the layout (i.e., number of wells, distribution, and screen interval/depth) of
lactate injection and observation wells
The specific tasks are discussed below.
xp-1inco1n-MIP-Apr06-o6750.d«:Irt 2
