Past Cleanup Activities
In 1998, a system was built to remove and treat
PCE contaminated groundwater from the area.
Groundwater is pumped from wells along Pacific
Avenue and Inglewood Avenue. This system is
still in use today.
In 1999, a soil vapor extraction (SVE) system was
built to remove PCE vapors from the soil beneath
the shopping center. In 2007, the SVE system was
expanded to include an air sparging component. o'
Air sparging involves blowing air into the •
groundwater which forces the dissolved PCE in the
groundwater up into the soil to be removed by the
SVE system.
Approximately 11 tons of PCE have been removed Typical drill rig installing groundwater monitoring well
from the soil and groundwater beneath the
shopping center using these systems.
Remaining Cleanup Effort
Some low levels of PCE remain in groundwater east
of the Lincoln Village Shopping Center that need to r
be cleaned up. It is important to note that these
impacts do not pose a threat to any water
consumers. We anticipate there will be 3 phases
of work to complete the cleanup: r r
Phase 1 Additional Investigation `" a
Goal: Collect additional information about
the extent and nature of PCE impacts Groundwater Sampling Collection Activities
in the off-site groundwater area.
When: Within the next 6 months (May-
October 2012).
Work: Drilling and installing groundwater
monitoring wells; collecting soil and Phase 3 Final Remedy
groundwater samples.
Phase 2 Testing Goal: Implement final PCE cleanup remedy
and monitor effectiveness.
Goal: Test the effectiveness of potential PCE When: Final PCE cleanup implemented
cleanup technologies. within next 3 years (by December
When: Within the next 8 months (May- 2014), followed by performance
December 2012). monitoring for 5-10 years.
Work: Install groundwater monitoring wells, Work: Final groundwater PCE
Evaluate PCE cleanup technologies cleanup, continued groundwater
and alternatives, collect groundwater extraction, groundwater sample
samples. collection.
For more information contact:
• Geotracker website -
https/Igeotracker waterboards ca gov/regulators/screens/menu asp?global id=SL205132997
• Joe Niland, Lincoln Village Shopping Center Trustee: iniland angeosvntec.com, (916)-637-8325
• Scott Forbess, Geosyntec Consultants: sforbesstageosvntec.com, (916)-637-8329
• Roberto Cervantes, Central Valley Water Board, rcervantes(c_waterboards.ca.gov, (916)-464-4682
