f stored on the property. Prior to 1945, the area wasart o
la f a in:u•sh. The site was filled about
1945 and used as U.S. Navel housing until 1965. The housing was abandoned until 1979, at
which time it was demolished. The site was redeveloped in 1980 and the Swett & Crawford
commercial building at 711 North Pershing was constructed. Elie site is well lanilscapecl aiid
verdant.
The topography in the area is flat. The area is primarily zoned for residential use, although
commercial facilities are present along Pershing Avenue.
a
3.0 SOIL ASSESSMENT
Upgradient drilled a total of six shallow borings on the three properties. Three borings were drilled
on the Caltrans property south of the Pershing Avenue on-ramp to fiiterstate 5, one boring was
drilled on the Red Cross property to the north and two borings were drilled on the subject property
near the location were the highest contamination was discovered by RESNA (Figure 2).
The borings were drilled to depths of 3 to 5 feet below grade using a hydraulic gasoline-powered
post-hole digger equipped with 6" auger bits. A soil sample was collected at the bottom of each
hole using a slide hammer loaded with a 6" brass sample sleeve. Samples were covered with teflon
sheets, capped with phistic end caps, and sealed with duct tape. The samples were then placed in a
cooled ice chest. Samples were transmitted to Excelchem Environmental Labs of North Highlands
for analysis of organochlorine pesticides (EPA method 8080). The borings were backfilled with a
cement grout slurry at the direction of Mr. lnfurna.
_ I
I
4.0 LABORATORY RESULTS
None of the samples obtained November 19 contained detectable levels of pesticide compounds
(Appendix A). After discussing the results with Ms. Snell, Upgradient was given pernnission to
return and obtain a sample as close as possible to the location where the highest levels of
contamination were found by RESNA. On December 10, Upgr-adient personnel obtained SP-6
from a depth o 4.5 et as near as possible to the area where RESNA obtained B-4 (Figure 2).
SP-6 was tested for organochlorine pesticides, petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel and total oil
and grease. The tests found no contamination of hydrocarbons or pesticides.
