Soil Sampling- Product Lines and Dispensers
• On September 10 and 14, 1999, a total of twenty-one soil samples from nlnteen
locations, designated PL-1 through PL-6, D-1 through D-5, VL-1 through VL-4, VP-1,
and OPL-1 to OPL-3 were collected from beneath the product lines, dispensers, vapor
lines, the vapor pot, and old product lines (Figure 2) Soil samples were analyzed for
TPH-g by EPA Method 8015, BTEX and MtBE by EPA Method 8020,and fuel
oxygenates (EtBE, DIPS, TAME, TBA, 1,2,-DCA, and EDB) by EPA Method 8260
TPH-g was reported in eighteen of the twenty-one samples with concentrations ranging
from 1 94 mg/kg (PL-5@4 5')to 11,300 mg/kg (OPL-3@4 5') Benzene was reported
in fifteen samples at concentrations ranging from 0 0316 mg/kg (PL-2@7') to 48 3
mg/kg (D-4@5') MtBE was reported in fourteen of the samples ranging in
concentration from 0 110 mg/kg (VL-3@3') to 6 47 mg/kg (D-1@3') TBA, DIPE,
EtBE, TAME, 1,2 DCA, and EDB were reported as nondetect in all samples Soil
analytical data are presented in Table 1 and soil sample locations are shown on Figure 2
Field and laboratory procedures are presented as Attachment B Certified analytical
reports and chain-of-custody documentation are presented as Attachment C
Stockpiled Soil Removal
Approximately 189 tons of soil generated during the removal of the underground
facilities and the trenching for new piping was stockpiled onsite Composite samples
• were collected to characterize the soil prior to disposal On September 28, 1999 and
October 6, 1999, Dillard Environmental Services hauled the soil to BFI Landfill In
Livermore, CA for disposal Stockpile analytical data is presented in Table 2 Certified
analytical reports and chain-of-custody documentation are presented as Attachment C
Soil disposal certificates are included as Attachment D
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
• TPH-g, benzene, and MtBE were detected at maximum concentrations
of 11,300 mg/kg, 48 3 mg/kg, and 6 47 mg/kg, respectively
• TBA, DIPE, EtBE, TAME, 1,2 DCA, and EDB were reported as
nondetect in all samples
• Approximately 189 tons of soil removed during UST and product line
upgrade activities were disposed of at BFI Landfill in Livermore, CA
CONCLUSION
Based on the data collected during the above-described field work, gasoline
hydrocarbons have impacted soil in the areas of the product lines and dispensers
SECOR recommends that a site assessment be conducted to define the extent of
hydrocarbons in soil beneath the site
