Escalon Cellars TL F06601.01
February 9, 2000 Page 3
3.0 ANALYTICAL RESULTS OF RECENT SAMPLING EVENT
As discussed with Ms. Wendy Wyels of the CVRWQCB in a meeting with representatives of
Canandaigua Winery and Twining Labs, Twining and Canandaigua proposed to sample the four
production wells at the site and the east, west and cooling water samples for volatile organics using
EPA Methods 601 and 8260. Twining personnel sampled these wells and sumps on January 12,
2000. The wells and sumps were sampled using Twining standard protocols which are included in
Appendix A. Each well was allowed to run for 15 to 20 minutes prior to sampling with the
exception of Well No. 2 This well is powered by a diesel engine and is a standby source of water
in case of power failures. This well was started and allowed to run for 40 minutes before sampling.
The sumps were sampled using pre-cleaned disposable bailers. Each water sample was collected in
laboratory-prepared sampling containers and placed in an ice chest after collection of the sample.
The samples were delivered to Twining Laboratories,Inc.,a State of California certified laboratory
under chain of custody for laboratory analysis. The analytical results for the samples are
summarized in Table 1.
TABLE 1
SUMMARY OF PURGEABLE HALOCARBONS
Analyzed using EPA Method 601
Sampled on January 12, 2000
Sampling Chloroform Bromoform Freon 11 Dichlorodifluoromethane
Point ug/1 ug/1 ug/1 Freon 12
Well No. 1 <0.5 <0.5 <0.5 <1.0
Well No. 2 <0.5 <0.5 <0.5 <1.0
Well No. 3 0.58 <0.5 <0.5 1.3
Well No. 4 <0.5 <0.5 <0.5 <1.0
East Sump 4.4 0.54 <0.5 <1.0
West Sump 4.7 <0.5 <0.5 <1.0
Clear Water 0.51 1.1 <0.5 <1.0
Sum
No Freon 11 has been detected in the last two sampling events of the production wells.
Dichlorodifluoromethane was detected in well three at just above the detection limit for that
constituent. No dichlorodifluoromethane has been detected in any of the production wells in
previous sampling events. Chloroform has been detected historically in the east and west cooling
water sumps and was detected in the east and clear water sumps in the samples collected in January,
2000. Canandaigua is required to chlorinate ground water pumped from their production wells. It
is Twining's experience that when chlorinated water comes into contact with organic and or plant
