+../
Taber
Since 1954
1P2/399/245-4
5.1 PHYSICAL HAZARDS
The principal anticipated physical hazards include the hazard due to passing traffic
while working on road shoulders, exposure to noise from site equipment, operation of
drilling or direct push sampling equipement; and other hazards associated with any
outdoor labors such as slips, trips, falls and material-handling (back) injuries.
5.1.1 DRILLING/SAMPLING OPERATIONS
+ Physical hazards are associated with subsurface drilling operations and equipment.
Both above and below ground utility lines present a potential for electrocution if contacted
by drilling equipment. Utilities and other subsurface obstructions must be located before
soil borings are drilled. The Project Manager is responsible for securing utility clearances.
The driller must maintain a safe clearance distance (normally 25 feet) between overhead
utility lines and the drill rig.
Drilling activities involve a number of potential injury hazards including, but not
limited to the following:
Injuries from flying debris, being caught up in machinery, hydraulic failures,
. unguarded points of operation, air-borne particulates, equipment rollover and
other hazards associated with the transportation and use of drill rigs.
Injuries from extremely loud noises associated with the operation of the drill rig.
To protect site personnel, hard hats, steel-toed boots, safety glasses and hearing
protection are mandatory in the vicinity of the drill rig. The following steps will be
followed to help minimize accidents and injuries associated with drilling:
• Drilling rig will be operated only by a trained, fully-qualified operator.
Prior to drilling activities, the drilling rig will be inspected in accordance with
CAL-OSHA and manufacturers requirements.
LA • Drilling rig will be operated in accordance with manufacturers specifications and
applicable CAL-OSHA regulations.
Drilling tools will be kept in their proper place.
• Appropriate fire extinguishers will be readily available for use.
5.1.2 ROADSIDE WORK
The following procedures shall be followed for all work within the right-of-way of a
public road or other location where a hazard from vehicular traffic could occur:
4
