PHS-EHD has requested that!
MTBE be added to groundwater analyses for the quarterly requirements for both of these sites. Thank you for
your cooperation in adding this constituent to your scheduled sampling event of March 11, 1996.
Newly established guidelines from the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board (CVRWQCB) ed
March 1, 1996 have recommended that MTBE can be measured by GC-PID. It can be included asa target
compound in methods 8020, 8021, or TPH/BTEX, if a PID is used in combination with FID. Initial results f a
confirmation study done by Shell indicates a low level of false positives when MTBE reported by PID is
confirmed by GC/MS.
As part of project quality control, it is recommended that at least one sample per site which was positive for
MTBE also be confirmed by GC/MS (Method 8260). Reporting limits (approximately three to five times hi er
than detections limits) should be as close to 5 parts per billion as practicable.
As a precautionary step, PHS-EHD recommends that all wells be sampled for MTBE for two consecutive
quarters. After the reports have been evaluated by PHS-EHD, it will decided whether or not to continue the
testing for MTBE. Please make every attempt to submit quarterly reports prior to the next quarterly sampling
event so that any consecutive requirements may be met without breaks.
Thank you for your continuing cooperation in investigating and mutually sampling these sites as requested b
PHS-EHD.
