Health and Safety Plan
Cleanup and Abatement Order No 5-00-707 EAI Pro ect No 1232
6.0 HAZARD ASSESSMENT
rThe following potential exposures may exist at the Site
• Skin contact with contaminated soils
• Inhalation of vapors
• Ingestion of contaminated materials, especially if poor personal hygiene is practiced
Previous investigations at the Site have included the sampling and analytical testingof soil and
ground water for
-Compound Test Method
Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons EPA 418 1, 8n] M
' Benzene, Toluene, Eth (benzene, Xylenes EPA 8020, 8021
Volatile Or anic Com ounds (including fuel oxygenates) EPA 8260B
Lead EPA 6010
iTPH and BTEX, all of which have been detected beneath the Site in soil and/or ground water,
are the primary chemicals of concern These chemicals were not stored in their pure form, but
rather, are constituents of the petroleum products (e g , gasoline) and petroleum waste (i e ,
waste oil) formerly stored at the Site in USTs All USTs were removed from the Site by 1988
6.1 Chemical Hazards ,
From an occupational health viewpoint, given that any potential exposure to Site personnel will
be only for a short period of time, the levels of contaminants that may potentially be
encountered during investigation activities should not represent a significant concern
Appendix B contains information on toxicological, chemical and physical characteristics of the
major chemicals of concern The list of chemicals of concern will be reassessed, as more data
becomes available
An overview of the hazards associated with exposure to chemicals of concern is listed below in
terms of the following types of occupational exposure limits
' Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA)
PELs are time-weighted averages defined as concentrations for a normal 8-hour work day and a
40-hour work week to which almost all workers can be repeatedly exposed to, day after day,
' without suffering adverse health effects
Short Term Exposure Limit (STEL) OSHA STELs are defined as the concentration to
which workers can be exposed for short time periods without irritation, tissue damage, or
narcosis sufficient to likely cause impairment of self-rescue or precipitate accidental injury
The STEL is a 15-minute time-weighted average that should not be exceeded at any time
during the work day
SAH 1232CAOHASP _9-
ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT, INC.,
