M Infurna Project No 1232
July 6, 2000
Page 2
1
direct reading of the VOC concentrations in extracted soil vapor and combustion gases, as
required by the SJ VAPCD permit, are presented in Table 2
2 0 REMEDIATION RESULTS
' Since start-up, the unit has operated for a total of 2,835 hours, removing approximately 7,561
pounds of petroleum hydrocarbons from impacted soil and ground water During this reporting
period the unit operated for 1,036 hours and removed approximately 210 pounds of petroleum
' hydrocarbons The calculated amount of TPH, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes
and the corresponding destruction and removal efficiency of the thermal oxidizer are presented
in Tables 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, respectively
' Analytical results of ground water samples obtained from ground water monitoring wells on
June 6, 2000, indicate significant reduction in the concentrations of dissolved hydrocarbons
' (see Table 8) A complete ground water monitoring report will be submitted separately
3.0 CONCLUSIONS
' The remediation unit has been operating in full compliance with the Permit to Operate issued
by the SJVAPCD During this reporting period, the unit operated for 1,036 hours and removed
approximately 210 pounds of total petroleum hydrocarbons from impacted soil and ground
water The concentration of carbon dioxide in extracted soil vapor (0 7%) in excess of the
concentration in the ambient air (0 02%), demonstrates that hydrocarbons in soil and ground
' water are subjected to biodegradation by natural microorganisms
The concentration of hydrocarbons in extracted soil vapor indicates significant reduction, since
' initial startup of the system, which makes it neither necessary nor economical to operate the
system on a continuous basis Therefore, the system will be operated in an on/off(pulse mode)
for the next quarterly period
' The concentration of dissolved hydrocarbons in ground water also has declined considerably in
all monitoring wells
ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT,INC©
