Kennedy/Jenks Consultants <br /> Chapter 5: Process Water Treatment Evaluation Work Plan <br /> This work plan presents an outline for evaluation of the existing process water treatment at The <br /> Wine Group Franzia Winery and was prepared in response to Item 2.d of the CAO. <br /> 5.1 Introduction <br /> The Wine Group treats and disposes of Facility process water by prescreening and using land <br /> application practices. Land application of process water is a widely accepted and practiced <br /> _ method for treatment and disposal of process water. Land application processes can transform, <br /> remove, or retain process water constituents by physical-chemical and biological processes that <br /> occur in the soil profile. Solids remaining in the process water after screening are filtered and <br /> dried on the ground surface of the vineyards. Dissolved organic material percolates into the soil <br /> column where biological treatment, stabilization, and pH buffering occurs. After drying, the soil is <br /> often scarified or disked before the next application of process water. The objective of <br /> Chapter 5, the Process Water Treatment and Evaluation Work Plan (PWTE Work Plan) is to <br /> present a plan to evaluate the existing vineyard soils and their ability to treat the process water. <br /> 5.2 Process Water Generation <br /> Several processing streams from the wine making process combine with stormwater when <br /> present to produce the process water discharged to the vineyards. As discussed in Section <br /> 1.3.2, general winery process water consists of crush equipment wash water, stillage waste, <br /> general cellar wash water, spent regenerant water from ion exchange units, Facility stormwater <br /> runoff, and non-contact cooling water. Various chemicals are added to the process water during <br /> various cleaning, washing, ion exchange, and storage operations. <br /> The contributing process water streams are proposed for individual characterization in the PWC <br /> Work Plan, Chapter 4 of this Work Plan. <br /> 5.3 Combined Process Water Quality <br /> The combined process water generated at the Facility is typical for wine processing and <br /> distillery operations for similar wineries throughout central California. Table 1 provides a <br /> summary of historical analytical results for samples collected from process water flows <br /> discharged to the vineyards since 2001. As with most wineries, the strength of the process <br /> water is highly variable depending on the time of season and operations at the winery. <br /> 5.4 Process Water Management System <br /> 5.4.1 Operations <br /> Currently, process water and Facility stormwater drains to the sump where it is prescreened and <br /> pumped to the vineyards for land application treatment and irrigation. <br /> Groundwater Protection Work Plan, The Wine Group Page 5-1 <br /> Franzia Winery, Ripon, California <br /> �ti�E 2;I^�q <br />
