O'Brien
California Regional Water Quality Control Board
Central Valley Region
11020 Sun Center Drive #200
Rancho Cordova, CA 95670-6114
Subject: Monitoring Well Installation Work Plan Addendum
Delicato Family Vineyards
K/J 0765001*00
Dear Mr. O'Brien:
On 11 April 2008, Kennedy/Jenks Consultants (Kennedy/Jenks) submitted the Monitoring Well
Installation Work Plan (the Work Plan) on behalf of Delicato Family Vineyards (Delicato). The
Work Plan was submitted to the California Regional Water Quality Control Board (CRWQCB) in
response to a meeting with the CRWQCB on 6 March 2008. In that meeting, and on behalf of
Delicato, Kennedy/Jenks proposed additional process water management strategies including
expansion of the land application area to supplement the existing 20 acres of checks with
approximately 111 acres of Delicato-owned vineyards.
The proposed additional land application areas are located upgradient of the existing land
application areas and associated existing groundwater monitoring wells. Therefore, a new
upgradient monitoring well was proposed to characterize background concentrations in
groundwater beneath the proposed additional land application areas.
On 14 May 2008 the CRWQCB issued a letter entitled Conditional Approval, Groundwater
Monitoring Work Plan, Delicato Vineyards, Manteca, San Joaquin County. The comments in the
CRWQCB letter are provided below, together with Delicato's response.
Comment 1: Although proposed Well MW-4 is located at the upgradient edge of the 60-acre
land application area, once wastewater application begins on the LAA, groundwater at the well
will likely be impacted by the wastewater application. Therefore once land application of waste
begins, Well MW-4 will not be appropriate for determination of background groundwater quality.
An additional monitoring well may be required.
Response to Comment 1: Proposed Well MW-4 is located on the hydraulically upgradient side
of the parcel, as far upgradient as possible while still located on land owned by Delicato.
Process water hydraulic loading rates on the parcel are expected to be less than 0.5 inches per
week. Also, the depth to groundwater is approximately 30 to 35 feet below ground surface.
Given the light hydraulic loadings, depth to groundwater, and location of the well, notable
Changes in groundwater quality in Well MW-4 are not expected to result from the process water
9:gsgroWpadmnyOb107i076500100aelicab106conspndits x install wM pin addendum\wk pin addendu".dx
