The soils from the four monitoring wells contained no detectable
concentrations of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) as gasoline, benzene,
toluene, xylene, and ethylbenzene (BTX&E) . Soils from monitoring well 5 (MW5) ,
installed next to the existing waste oil tank, were also analyzed for volatile
organic compounds and total oil and grease; however, none were detected.
Groundwater from each of the four wells was analyzed for TPH as gasoline, BTX&E,
ethylene dibromide (EDB) , and lead; however, none was detected in any of the
wells . MW5 was also analyzed for volatile organic compounds, total oil and
grease, and selected metals. Laboratory results for MW5 indicate that the
groundwater contained 7 parts per billion (ppb) of 1, 1-dichloroethane (1 , 1-DCA)
(minimum laboratory detection limit 3 ppb) and low levels of cadmium, chromium,
nickel , and zinc. A confirmation sample, however, was not collected for analysis
from MW5 or any of the other wells on the site to confirm the presence of
contamination. With SES's results, Chevron's conclusion was that " . . .as there
is an investigation of solvent contamination from two nearby dry cleaners,
Chevron cannot, at this time, conclude that this low level contamination is a
result of Chevron's operations. "
SES' s 1990 investigation was prompted by a 1987 investigation of the Chevron site
by Groundwater Technology, Inc. For that investigation, one monitoring well
(MW1) was installed to a total depth of 52 feet within the former underground
tank excavation. Laboratory analysis of soil samples collected during the
drilling of MW1 indicated no detectable concentrations of total hydrocarbons,
