C-SHADSOFS91.1/1.4
12/12/91
Beginning in about 1957, maintenance and repair of fixed-wing aircraft and
helicopters were conducted at SHARPE. The peak period of activity reportedly
occurred in the late 1960s.
The heavy-equipment maintenance function at SHARPE reportedly began in the
early 1950s and continued until 1976. Peak activity for this operation also
occurred in the late 1960s, when several thousand pieces of equipment
reportedly were processed each year.
Previous environmental studies have indicated groundwater contamination with
offpost migration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Additionally, arsenic,
selenium, and bromacil have been detected sporadically in groundwater samples.
Available data indicate that the primary source(s) of the VOC contamination is
associated with past mission-related activities (e.g., vehicle maintenance) at
SHARPE. A major area of VOC contamination is the South Balloon Area of
SHARPE; however, other individual source areas may include former burial
trenches and/or several former ground-stained areas. The potential source(s) of
the metals is not readily apparent and may include natural and offsite
contributions as well as onsite sources.
As a result of early investigations conducted at SHARPE, an interim groundwater
extraction and treatment system (referred to as the South Balloon Area
Groundwater Treatment System) has been installed and in operation since March
1987 to control migration of contaminated groundwater in that portion of the
site. A separate interim RI and FS was also prepared by McLaren Environmental
Engineering of Rancho Cordova, CA, to identify and evaluate interim remedial
action alternatives in the North Balloon Area. As a result of this investigation, a
second interim groundwater pump-and-treat system was constructed in the North
:1
1-7
