1.3.1 TCE AND OTHER NONFUEL VOLATILES
Results of the soil gas investigation determined that both laterally extensive and
- localized spot locations of TCE-contaminated soil gas exist. These locations
include burial sites, trenches, disposal ponds, storage areas, and warehouses
where VOCs are believed to have been received and/or handled in the past. In
addition, several areas of soil gas contamination appear to exist for which
correlation to previous site activities cannot be determined at this time. This is
particularly true for the low-level concentration peaks [<100 parts per billion
(ppb)] that, although generally associated with the higher concentration peaks,
are found throughout the depot and may represent locations of small-scale
releases.
Eight plumes of VOC-contaminated groundwater had been identified, probably
related to VOC releases to the ground at several locations. Some of these plumes
have been identified since the beginning of the RI effort. Recent analysis
suggests that two of the plumes, 4 and 5, are in reality a single plume.
All known occurrences of WE in groundwater are associated with an area of soil
at which TCE soil gas concentrations are greater than 500 ppb. The good
correlation which occurs between TCE concentrations greater than 500 ppb in
1-12
