C-SHADSOFS91.1/1.40
12/12/91
boring just downgradient (northwest) from the slab. All soil samples were found
to be free of TCE. Possible paint and solvent contamination of soil adjacent to
Bldg. S-119 was investigated by collecting two surficial soil samples from depths
of 0 to 0.5 ft in the immediate area of the building. Sample S3-Sl was collected
approximately 15 ft west of the building; Sample S3-S2 was collected near a
drainage grate located approximately 15 ft south of the building (Fig. 1.5-1). In
addition, a sediment sample (S3-SED1), a water sample (S3-SWI), and a
duplicate of the water sample were collected from the sump. The sediment on
ithe bottom of the 4- to 5-ft deep sump consisted mostly of sand and gravel; some
pipes and other obstacles also were encountered on the bottom. Sediment
thicknesses varied from approximately 0 to 0.5 ft, and the water depth was
approximately 1 ft. Soil, sediment, and water samples were analyzed for metals
and VOCs. No VOC contamination above detection limits was observed at this
J
site. Elevated lead concentrations were detected in all three samples, with the
sump sample the highest at 4,110 µg/g. Chromium and zinc concentrations were
also high, ranging from 724 to 1,200 µg/g for chromium and 1,190 to
1,890 µg/g for zinc.
Additional field testing was performed in 1991 to delineate the extent of lead
contamination at Bldg. 119. The approach to the field testing, methods used;
and conclusions are presented in a supplemental report to the RI (not published
as of yet). The results of the study indicated the highest levels of lead
contamination were found in the surface soil samples collected south, southwest,
and immediately west of former Bldg. S-119. The highest lead concentration
reported was 5,115 ppm. None of the split-spoon samples collected at depths
between 0.5 and 4.0 ft-bls in areas with high surface soil contamination
contained any measurable concentrations of lead. Also, the two samples
collected at one location indicated that the contamination (4,493 ppm) was in
t 1-84
