T-47. The area
immediately adjacent to Bldg. T-47 is covered with concrete pavement.
Bldgs. T-9, T-40, and T-67, which are located slightly to the northwest of T-47,
were also used for pesticide storage, and mixing and rinsing reportedly was
conducted outside adjacent to these structures. Much of the area immediately
outside these buildings is unpaved. A shallow, unlined ditch drains the area.
The ditch slopes gently downhill to the east for approximately 330 ft to a
shallow depression, and beyond the depression slopes uphill to the east for less
than 50 ft and then veers south. The area north of the ditch has been recently
paved; to the south there is old pavement with small areas of bare soil. Previous
studies have indicated the soil in the vicinity of the mix area is contaminated
with organochlorine pesticides (ESE, 1990). The current study was intended to
determine the lateral and vertical extent of soil pesticide contamination at the
mix site and focused on the area encompassing the previously identified
contamination and the unexplored drainage ditch.
I
i
3.1.1 RESULTS OF PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS
As part of the RI (ESE, 1990), four soil samples (plus one duplicate) were.
collected at two locations at the pesticide mix area (Fig. 3-1). Samples S1.131-A,
Sl-Bl-B, and Sl-BI-C were collected in a single 15-ft-deep boring, Sl-Bl,.from
i
lip
the intervals 0 to 5, 5 to 10, and 10 to 15 ft, respectively. `Sample Sl-Sl was
collected from 0 to 1 ft in the ditch that drains the mix area. All of the samples
were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides, chlorinated herbicides, and
bromacil. Low levels of DDT, DDD, and DDE were detected in the 0- to 5-ft
interval in the boring, still lower levels of DDT and DDE in the 5- to 10-ft
3-1
ta
