C:\SHAD\APPM.2
NOV. 1991
Two treatment areas already exist, a third treatment area is proposed. Each
treatment area will contain two packed tower air strippers and associated
pumps and blowers, vapor phase carbon units, and an equalization tank. In
addition to the 40 ft x 40 ft treatment area, various groundwater extraction
and discharge piping networks will be located in each area.
An evaporation pond with connector wells is proposed for disposal of a
portion of the treated groundwater. The proposed evaporation pond is
approximately 1,125 ft x 675 ft and will be located south of the North Balloon
Area. Connector wells located in the evaporation pond will reinject treated
groundwater, using the static head of the water level in the pond as the
driving pressure, into the three aquifers zones below the site. That portion of
the treated groundwater not disposed of in the evaporation pond with
connector wells will be either:
o used for reuse by the DESTEC Operating Company (for their
Cogeneration facility), or
o discharged to the South San Joaquin Irrigation Drainage Canal,
through an existing transmissions line.
Additionally, the need for a backup disposal system is currently being
evaluated and may be utilized in addition to the above described disposal
systems. Specifically, this backup system would consist of a discharge
pipeline from the site to the San Joaquin River. An estimated 20,000 feet
of pipe would be required between the site and the river.
9. Sauarg fqQhW. Total square footage of the three treatment areas is
approximately 4800 square feet (ft) (maximum). Groundwater extraction and
discharge piping networks will also be located on site.
10. Number of floors of construction. The treatment system is constructed on
ground level.
11. Amount of off-street parking provided. None. Groundwater treatment areas
are unmanned, automated facilities. Off-street parking is available in the
vicinity of the treatment facilities for infrequent maintenance visits.
12. Attach Plans. Construction plans have not been developed at this time.
13. Proposed scheduling. The groundwater treatment facilities in the North
Balloon and South Balloon Areas currently exist at Sharpe. Construction of
M-2
