extents of TCE plumes with concentrations above 5 ug/L are predicted to be substantially
smaller after mass removal than they are without mass removal. Please resolve these
apparent contradictions.
4. Section 3.1, Overview, Page 25: In Section 3.1.1 it is stated that the extraction system
optimization consists of three steps; however, only two of the three steps appear to be
discussed. The first step is to operate only 15 wells for plume containment and the
second step appears to be rerouting the conveyance lines, shutting down two of the three .
groundwater treatment plants, and discharging treated groundwater to percolation ponds.
The text does not discuss a third step. Please discuss or make clearer the third step or
revise the stated number of steps for extraction system optimization.
MINOR COMMENTS
1. Section 1.2,Introduction, Page 2: The first sentence states the incorrect number of
continued operational extraction wells that would result in a high lifecycle costs if the
number of extraction wells were not reduced. The text states three extraction wells and
three treatment plants would result in a high lifecycle cost;however, there are currently
many more operational extraction wells at Defense Distribution Depot San Joaquin
California(DDJC)-Sharpe. Please state the correct number of operational extraction
wells that are currently at DDJC-Sharpe in the first sentence of Section 1.2.
2. Figures 2-9, TCE Plume in Layer 3, Scenario 28, 15 Extraction Wells Operating and
Figure 2-10,TCE Plume in Layer 4, Scenario 28, 15 Extraction Wells Operating,
Pages 21 and 23: On Figures 2-9 and 2-10, it appears that there is a section missing in
the middle of the central plumes of the initial conditions for layers 3 and 4. In both
figures there is a square in the center of the plume that shows a clear window to the base
map, however, it is assumed that this depiction is incorrect and that the figures are
missing the center portion of the TCE plumes for layers 3 and 4. Please correct Figure 2-
9'and 2-10 to show the correct initial conditions of the TCE plumes for layers 3 and 4.
2
