Infurna
San Joaquin County Public Health Services
September 9, 1999
Page 2
sheets, plastic end caps, and tape, labeled, and stored in an ice-cooled chest. Following
collection of soil and groundwater samples, boreholes will be backfilled with cement grout.
Grab groundwater samples will be collected from two borings advanced within the affected
soil near borings EB-2 and EB-7. The samples will be collected by advancing drive casing
through the affected soil until clean soil is observed in the soil core. The grab groundwater
samples will then be collected from just beneath the affected soil by installing a temporary well
made of polyvinyl chloride(PVC)blank casing and well screen within the cased borehole to
avoid cross-contamination of the sample by the affected soil. The grab groundwater samples
will be collected using a disposable bailer and will be decanted into 40-m1 acidified volatile
organic analysis (VOA)vials and 1-liter amber bottles. Sample containers will be labeled,
sealed in plastic bags, and stored in an ice-cooled chest.
Geomatrix will submit the soil and groundwater samples to a State of California certified
analytical laboratory under Geomatrix chain-of-custody control. Soil samples will be analyzed
for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) as crude oil (C8-C36 carbon range) by EPA Method
8015 Modified; for polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by EPA Method 8270 SIM,
and for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX)by EPA Method 8020. The
groundwater samples will be analyzed for BTEX using EPA Method 8021B; and PAHs using
EPA Method 8270 SIM.
The field work will be scheduled within two weeks of approval of this workplan. You will be
notified at least 48 hours prior to implementation of field work or if there are any changes in
the schedule. A check is included for the boring permits (APN 232-170-05 and 232-170-07);
the permit applications are being forwarded to you by Precision Sampling, Inc. Please call
either Elizabeth Lu at Chevron at(925) 842-1343 or Lange Jorstad at(510) 663-4100 if you
have any questions.
Sincerely,
GE MATRIX CONSULTANTS, INC.
Michael R.
