r
File No. NFE-4463-04 Doc. No. 9908-085
LAugust 23, 1999
L
Analytical Methods
C The soil samples collected from borings EB2 and E133 were delivered to Chromalab in Pleasanton,
L California (FLAP #1094) and analyzed for total extractable petroleum hydrocarbons (TEPH) as
diesel, motor oil, and crude oil using EPA modified method 8015 and benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (BTEX) using EPA method 8020. Samples were also sent by
overnight delivery, under chain of custody protocol, to Friedman and Bruya (F&B) in Seattle,
Washington (FLAP #1727) and analyzed for polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PNAs) using
EPA method 8270 SIM.
Analytical Results
The soil sample collected at a depth of 11 feet bgs from EB2 contained the following:
310 parts per million (ppm) TEPH as crude oil (based on the response factor of diesel)
° 0.063 ppm acenaphthene
0.120 ppm chrysene
° 0.490 ppm fluorene
° 1.1 ppm napthalene
r ° 1.0 ppm phenanthrene
L 0.078 ppm pyrene
All other analytes were below detection limits. However, the detection limits for the PNAs were
raised due to high levels of material.
The samples collected at depths of 9.5 and 10.5 feet bars from EB3 contained the following:
° 1,900 ppm TEPH as crude oil (based on the response factor of diesel)
0.570 ppm acenaphthene
r 0.180 ppm benz(a)anthracene
1.0 ppm chrysene
° 2.1 ppm fluorene
° 0.780 ppm pyrene
All other analytes were below detection limits. However, the detection limits for all analytes were
raised due to high levels of material. A summary of the analytical results is presented in Table 1.
Conclusions
Hydrocarbon concentrations were encountered in two of the six borings within the existing right-
of-way south of Old Byron Road. The laboratory report indicated TEPH as crude oil in
concentrations of 310 ppm in boring EB2 and 1900 ppm in boring EB3. The areas that contain
residual hydrocarbons in soil are located in the vicinity of the proposed alley near the hardware
store loading dock and pickup/receiving area and near the "Major 2" building.
Earth Systems Consultants Northern California 2
I
