San Joaquin County EHD
May 16, 2005
box (D 1-6.5), the two leach pits (P 1-3 and P24) and the one of the leach line samples (LL 1-3).
Sample LL2-3, collected from beneath the eastern most leach line, contained TRPH at 50 parts
per million (ppm) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate at 0.37 ppm. Analytical results are
summarized in Table 2. A copy of the laboratory report is included in Attachment C.
DISCUSSION OF RESULTS
TRPH and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) were detected at low levels in the soil sample
collected from beneath the easternmost leach line. DEHP is a plasticizer commonly associated with
PVC material. It was detected at a level well below the preliminary remedial goal (PRG)of 35 ppm
established for DEHP by the U.S. EPA. No PRG has been established for TRPH. A copy of the
pertinent page of the EPA's PRG October 2004 table showing the PRG for DEHP is included in
Attachment D.
The domestic well formerly used at the site is located more than 200 feet upgradient (southeast)
from the septic system, and groundwater is expected at roughly 80 feet bgs. Regional groundwater
flow is to the northwest. Because TPH and DEHP were detected at such low levels, groundwater is
not expected to be impacted by these constituents.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Mr. Van Spronsen proposes to complete the following activities, based upon Ground Zero"s
recommendations:
1. Submit a permit application to remove the septic tank. Although the tank has already been
removed, Mr. Van Spronsen requested that Ground Zero submit the appropriate permit
application for your files. A completed permit application and fee of $89 will be submitted
under separate cover. Mr. Van Spronsen proposes to dispose of the concrete debris from the
septic tank, which broke up during removal, along with other concrete debris that is routinely
generated by his farming operations. 1' 4w A P 0 0 /tqK
2. Complete evaporation of the liquid waste in the temporary storage tank pursuant to the March
9, 2005 workplan prepared by Ground Zero. Rinseate from the septic tank will be evaporated
and the resulting sludge will be tested for chemicals of concern and coliform, prior to spreading
on the ground surface.
G:\GROUNDZE\Berberian\SBreport.doc `
