Harlin Knoll 12 January 1993
San Joaquin County Public Health Services Page 2
Two sparging wells will be installed on the site as a part of the soil/groundwater
remediation system. The wells will be constructed of 2-inch diameter, PVC blank and
screened casing. The 5-foot-long screen will be placed at the lower extent of the
saturated soils containing or encapsulating free-phase hydrocarbons. The location of the
wells are shown in Figure la. Soil samples will be collected at 5-foot intervals during
borehole drilling, and soil samples collected both above and below static water will be
submitted to Pace Incorporated and analyzed for TPH-g and BTEX.
The best placement of the screened interval of the sparging wells will be determined by
increasing the sampling density near the lower extent of the impacted soils below the
water table. All drilling, well completion, and sampling will follow EA standard
protocols (see Appendix A of EA Report of Well Installation June 1991) which are in
accordance with the Tri-Regional Board Staff recommendations and the San Joaquin
County-Environmental Health Division guidelines. All field staff will have completed
required 40-hour OSHA safety training, and a site-specific Health and Safety Plan will be
prepared and followed during well installation and sampling.
The field work is tentatively scheduled for the first week of February 1993, if the site
access is granted. Underground Service Alert and the County will be notified at least
48 hours prior to any field work related to well installation.
Should you have any questions or comments regarding this scope of work, please contact
Terry Winsor, Doug Oram, or me.
Attached are the two permit applications, one for the off-site well and one for the two on-
site sparging wells.
Sincerely,
i
Jan;Stepek .G.
Project Geologist
JS/kmb
83739.42(2)/QRPr193/K..U.0
