SAFETY MEASURES AND PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Underground Utilities
To minimize the risk of contacting underground lines and cables,
the following steps should be done prior to installing a probe:
- Obtain site map and blueprints (including previous
station, if rebuilt:)
- Contact underground utility clearance service (In Northern
California, USAAlert 1-800-642-2444, must be done at least 2
working days in advance of field work)
- Walk the site looking for indications of lines (e.g. ,
pavement cuts and utility pull boxes)
Addition steps can include :
- Meet with client' s engineer on the site
- Use a pipe and cable locator
- Probe ahead of a well point with hand tools
Flammability Hazards
No smoking is allowed on the site. Minimize spark causing
activities.
If a vapor sample contains explosive levels of total volatile
hydrocarbons, no addition samples for vertical profiling should
be taken at this point .
Traffic Hazards
Barriers must be used to demarcate the work zone. Standard
traffic cones are not generally adequate due to their low
vertical profile. The taller, 28-inch high cones should be used.
Optionally, warning flags and barricade tape can be used with the
cones. In high traffic areas, safety pennants and plastic or
steel "A" frame type barricades may be used.
8
