locations that should capture the majority of the known dissolved
hydrocarbons at the subject site. The remaining existing wells
will function as observation wells to monitor the effectiveness
of the system. Based on the development plans that EA has
received, except for MW3, the locations of the pumping wells,
trench, and treatment system should have no conflict with the
proposed development. MW3 will be in a vapor-tight vault inside
the building, unless the Regional Board approves removing the
well-. -
The
ellThe system has been designed for 24-hour, unattended operation.
To protect the effluent from breakthrough, the Lower Explosive
Limit ( LEL) meter over the effluent holding tank will shut down
the entire system should the organic vapors above the treated
water exceed a preset limit . This LEL meter also will serve to
protect the storm sewer system against the accumulation of
explosive vapors from the treatment system.
Because it appears that the full extent of contamination has not
been defined, as indicated in EA' s April 1988 report, future
expansion contingencies have been built into the proposed system.
The oil/water separator has been oversized to accomodate a
possible increase in flow. Extra piping ducts will be installed
during the initial construction so that minimum retrenching and
filling will be necessary. These measures should greatly reduce
costs of expanding the system, should the need to install
additional groundwater depression pumps arise.
4
