1 . INTRODUCTION
In July 1987 , at the request of EXXON Company, U.S.A. ( EXXON) , EA
Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc. (EA) conducted an
investigation at former EXXON Retail Site 7-3942, located at the
southeast corner of the intersection of Pershing Avenue and Rose-
marie Lane ( 4444 Pershing Avenue ) in Stockton. The purpose of
the investigation was to delineate the extent of soil and ground-
water contamination by fuel hydrocarbons within the site
boundary.
1 . 1 SITE SETTING
` The site is located in the northeastern part of the city of
Stockton, on the flood plain of the Calaveras River about 2 .8
miles east from its confluence with the San Joaquin River (Figure
1 ) . The elevation of the site is between 8 and 10 feet above sea
level (msl ) and slopes gently toward the Calaveras River to the
south. The site was previously occupied by the EXXON retail
site, but at present all buildings and installation have been
removed, and the site is an unimproved grassy field.
To the northeast and southeast, the area adjacent to the site is
occupied by apartment buildings. Across Pershing Avenue and
Rosemarie Lane, about 100-200 feet from the site boundaries,
there are Shell and 7-11 service stations and other commercial
` buildings (Figure 2 ) .
1 . 2 SITE HYDROGEOLOGY
The investigated area lies within the Great Central Valley geo-
morphic province. This is a regional geosyncline with a gently
dipping east flank and a fairly steeply dipping west flank. The
.. downwarped basin is filled with Quaternary and Tertiary deposits
that are of considerable importance, since they contain within
their boundaries a large quantity of water of good quality.
1
