All analyses were performed using approved <br /> methodologies (EPA Methods and Standard Methods). <br /> Due to questionable soluble lead analytical results at locations A, B, and C, additional samples <br /> were collected from a depth of 1 foot on March 24, 1997. The resampling locations are <br /> identified on Figure 2 as AA, BB, and CC. These samples were analyzed by Agricultural & <br /> Priority Pollutants Laboratories (APPL, ELAP Cert. #1312) for total lead and soluble lead. <br /> Moderately elevated concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons (200 to 16,000 parts per million <br /> [ppm]) were identified in the samples collected from a depth of 1 foot at locations A, B, C, and <br /> D. These locations are extensions of the "contaminated" areas identified by Kaldveer as Areas <br /> I, II, and II. With the exception of 4.4 ppm TPHg at B-1', none of the samples contained <br /> detectable concentrations of TPHg or TPHd. The only BTEX constituents detected in these <br /> samples were very low levels of toluene and xylenes in sample B-1'. Samples collected from <br /> depths of 5 feet at these locations contained petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations reduced by <br /> an order of magnitude or more (< 1.0 to 300 ppm). <br /> Somewhat elevated concentrations of lead were reported in the samples collected from 1 foot at <br /> locations A, B, C, and D (46 to 200 ppm). Soluble Threshold Limit Concentration (STLC) lead <br /> levels at locations A, B, and C ranged from 7.9 to 22 ppm. Essentially complete attenuation <br /> of total lead with depth was apparent at these locations where samples from 5 feet had <br /> concentrations ranging from 7 to 16 ppm. These are equivalent to background levels at the site <br /> location (approximately 5 to 20 ppm). <br /> Duplicate samples collected at locations A, B, and C (labelled AA, BB, and CC) at a depth of <br /> 1 foot contained total lead at concentrations ranging from 66.3 to 94.7 ppm and STLC lead <br /> concentrations ranging from 1.8 to 8.3 ppm. Laboratory results are summarized in Table 1. <br /> The results of this phase of investigation were reported in the Soil Sampling Report - Results of <br /> Investigation, dated April 18, 1997. <br /> 5.2 Septic Tank Sampling--March 1997 <br /> On March 27, 1997, under the supervision of PHS/EHD, liquid (RT-ST water) and sludge (RT- <br /> ST sludge) samples were collected from the septic tank at the location shown on Figure 2. <br /> Using a jackhammer, the septic tank was exposed and a sampling hole was opened. The liquid <br /> sample was collected through the hole using a clean, disposable bailer. The sludge sample was <br /> collected just above the bottom of the tank by using a 3/4-inch diameter polyvinyl chloride <br /> (PVC) pipe as a coliwasa. Samples were analyzed by Argon for TPHg, TPHd, TRPH, VOCs, <br /> total lead and soluble lead. <br /> The septic tank samples (water and sludge) did not contain detectable VOCs, except for minor <br /> concentrations of TEX. TPHg was detected at concentrations of 0.62 and 10 ppm, respectively. <br /> TPHd was detected at concentrations of 27 and 4,400 ppm, respectively.
