FAX 916i63a-9385
September 11, 1997
Ms. Mary Meays
San Joaquin County Department of Public Health Services
Environmental Health Division
304 East Weber Avenue
Stockton, California 95201-388
Subject: Addendum to Revised Work Plan for On-Site Assessment
Holz Rubber Company, hic
1129 South Sacramento Street
Lodi, California
Delta Project No. D096-090
Dear Ms. Meays:
This letter is a request to install an additional soil boring at the Holz Rubber Company, Inc. (Holz)
located at 1129 South Sacramento Street, Lodi, California (Figure 1). The additional boring is
proposed to be installed approximately five feet from monitoring well MW-4 (Figure 2). Following the
collection, logging, and field screening of the soil samples from MW4, the chain-of-custody "Chain"
between the soil samples and the sampler was broke Due to this break in the "Chain", Delta is
requesting to install a soil boring adjacent to monitoring well MW-4 and collect soil samples at four
discreet intervals, s 26, 45;and 66 feet below surface grade. These were the samples scheduled for
submittal from MW-4. During drilling, soil cuttings will be continuously screened in the field using a
flame ionization detector(FID) for volatile compounds. Readings will be recorded.
Delta is not proposing to collect samples at 5 foot intervals from the soil boring (as was done in
MW-4)due to the soil borings proximity to MW4 and the reported lack of any positive field readings
during the installation of MW-4.
Soil Boring
The boring will be advanced using 8.25 inch outside diameter hollow stein augers. Soil samples will be
collected in cleaned brass tubes, 2 inches in diameter by 6 incites in length. The tubes are typically set
in an 18 inch long split-barrcl sampler. The sampler is conveyed to the bottom of the borehole attached
by a wire-line hammer device
When possible, the split-barrel sampler is driven its entire length, either hydraulically or by repeated
pounding a 140-pound hatmner using a 30-inch drop. The sealed sample is labeled and handled
according to the Quality Assurance Plan
Matcnal from one of the other tubes or the shoe of the sampler is screened m the field, according to the
Soil Sample Screening section. The data is recorded on the boring logs at the depth corresponding to
the sampling point.
Providing a Competitive Edge
