KEI-P88-1013 .QR3
January 29 , 1993
Page 3
recommended the installation of an additional monitoring well as a
replacement for farmer well MW9 . This well, identified as MW14, is
shown on the attached Figure 5 . In addition, in order to comply
with a request by the SJCPHS to bring well MW6 into active status,
KEI recommended that MW6 be destroyed and a replacement well
installed. This well, identified as MW15, is also shown on the
attached Figure 5. KEI understands that Unocal is currently in the
process of obtaining off-site access permission for this additional
work. Once off-site access agreements and all necessary permits
have been obtained, KEI will proceed with the proposed well
destruction and installation work.
As previously reported by KEI, additional monitoring wells in the
reported downgradient direction of the former Unocal site are not
recommended at this time. A Montgomery Wards ' auto repair facility
occupies the parcel (across Robinhood Drive) in the apparent
downgradient direction of the site. As noted in KEI Is report (KEI-
P88-1013 .R2) dated July 15 , 1992 , a previous inspection of the
Montgomery Wards ' site revealed areas of concrete and asphalt
disturbances that appeared to be the locations of former pump
-islands and underground storage tanks. Per a previous phone
conversation with Mr. Michael Infurna of the SJCPHS, the County is
requiring that Montgomery Wards perform an environmental investiga-
tion on their site. This investigation is apparently being
required because of contaminants that have been detected in the
vicinity of the former pump islands and underground tanks that have
been confirmed to previously exist at the site. KEI will review
the technical report for the Montgomery Wards ' site when it becomes
available, and will make additional recommendations pertaining to
the Unocal subsurface investigation as warranted.
DISTRIBUTION
A copy of this report should be sent to SJCPHS, and to the Regional
Water Quality Control Board, Central Valley Region.
LIMITATIONS
Environmental changes, either naturally-occurring or artificially-
induced, may cause changes in ground water levels and flow paths,
thereby changing the extent and concentration of any contaminants.
Our studies assume that the field and laboratory data are reason-
ably representative of the site as a whole, and assume that subsur-
face conditions are reasonably conducive to interpolation and
extrapolation.
