Updated Site Conceptual Model and Third Quarter 2002 Monitoring and Remediation Report <br /> Cleanuy and Abatement Order No 5-00-707 EAI Protect No 1232 <br /> 3.0 GROUND WATER MONITORING <br /> All ground water monitoring and sampling activities were completed by Gettler-Ryan, Inc <br /> between September 22 through 24, 2002 On September 18, 2002, the remediation system was <br /> deactivated to allow ground water to stabilize before initiating gauging and sampling activities <br /> The system was reactivated on September 28, 2002 after completion of all monitoring and <br /> sampling efforts for this reporting period. <br /> 3.1 Ground Water Sampling <br /> On September 22, 2002, prior to purging or sampling activities, depth measurements to fluid <br /> levels were obtained by GRI from all monitoring wells associated with the Wards and Unocal <br /> (MW-1 through MW-27) sites Depth measurements were obtained using an interface probe <br /> accurate to 0 01 foot No free-product was detected in any of the wells The water level <br /> measurement for each well was converted to mean sea level (MSL) datum by subtracting the <br /> measured water level for each well from its respective "top of well casing elevation" datum <br /> (see Table 3) <br /> Between September 22 and 24, 2002, ground water samples were collected from the wells by <br /> GRI for analytical testing Standard operating procedures used by GRI for ground water <br /> monitoring are contained in Appendix A Appendix B contains the GRI ground water <br /> monitoring field logs, and Appendix C the chain of custody records <br /> 3.2 Effluent Handling <br /> As requested by Unocal, the purge water and decontamination water generated during sampling <br /> activities was transported by GRI to Tosco — San Francisco Area Refinery, located in Rodeo, <br /> California (see Appendix A) <br /> 3.3 Analytical Testing <br /> The samples were delivered for analytical testing to Sequoia Analytical in San Carlos, <br /> California a state certified hazardous waste testing laboratory (Certificate No 2360) Sequoia <br /> Analytical is certified for all tests completed as part of this investigation <br /> The samples were analyzed for VOCs including fuel oxygenates, e g > MTBE TBA DIPE <br /> ETBE, TAME, and EDB by EPA Method 8260B, and TPH-G by modified EPA Method 8015 <br /> Pursuant to discussions with the RWQCB, the samples were not tested for ethanol or methanol <br /> Tables 1 and 4 present the historic and current (September 2002) analytical test data for the <br /> sites, respectively Appendix C contains the laboratory reports <br /> Pursuant to a request from the RWQCB, the laboratory reports list several "tentatively <br /> identified compounds" (TICS) that are not typically reported with 8260B compounds In the <br /> current laboratory reports, benzene and all compounds following benzene are typical EPA <br /> 8260B compounds The TICS are presented at the beginning of each laboratory report pnor to <br /> BHM WORD 1232RO291 -5- ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT, INC <br />
