Updated Site Conceptual Model and Second Quarter 2002 Monitoring and Remediation Report
Cleanup and Abatement Order No 5-00-707
EAI Project No 1232
• 4 0 REMEDIATION SYSTEM STATUS REPORT
4.1 Remediation Compound Relocation
Due to construction work at the Wardssite by Stone Brothers, the remediation compound was
relocated approximately 300 feet east of its former location The remediation system was
restarted on April 21, 2002
4.2 Remediation Results
During the Second Quarter 2002, the oxidizer was operated for approximately 446 hours while
the air sparging compressor was operated for 735 hours The vapor extraction system removed
only 38 pounds of hydrocarbons (see Tables 5 and 6) Due to low concentration of VOCs in
the extracted soil vapor, the remediation system was operated in a "pulsed" air sparging mode
(three days "on" and four days "off") the last half of the quarter
On April 21, 2002, VOC readings were obtained from vapor extraction wells using a PID All
readings were insignificant, i e , at or just slightly above the background level with the
exception of wells VEW-2, VEW-13, and MW-I9S which had PID readings in excess of 1000
ppmv Well VEW-2 had the highest PID reading of all wells Analytical testing of soil vapor
obtained from VEW-2 contained TPH at a concentration of 239 ppmv, total xylenes 2 9 ppmv,
MTBE of 0 6 ppmv (by EPA Method 8021 B) Benzene and toluene were below the detection
limit of 0 1 ppmv Note during this sampling event, an excessive amount of water vapor was
observed in the air stream from well MW-25S although no sparging was being performed in
well MW-25D
On April 21, 2002, analytical testing of soil vapor at the inlet of the
p oxidizer indicated a TPH
concentration of 49 ppmv (see Appendix C) or 158 µg/L, total xylenes of 1 5 ppmv, MTBE of
0 1 ppmv (by EPA Method 8021B) Benzene and toluene concentrations were below the
detection limit of 0 1 ppmv
' As required by conditions of the air quality permit quarterly sampling was performed on Tune
17, 2002 Only 0 21 ppmv of total xylenes were detected in the soil vapor sample taken at the
inlet of the oxidizer No other chemicals were detected
Since starting the remedial system, the thermal oxidizer has operated for a total of 5,706 hours
and the sparging compressor for 6,746 hours, removing approximately 8,453 pounds of
petroleum hydrocarbons from impacted soil and izround water (see Table 6) ThP arnn„nt of
biodegraded hydrocarbons is not included in this total and is difficult to calculate V M Yy
Since restarting the remediation system in Tune 2001, the thermal oxidizer has operated for
1,048 hours and the sparging compressor for 2,810 hours, removing total of 93 pounds of
petroleum hydrocarbons from the subsurface by vapor extraction (see Table 6)
IIHM 1232RO231 -6-
' ENVIRONMENTALAUDIT, INC QP
