Updated Site Conceptual Model and Second Quarter 2003 Momtoruig and Remediation Report
Cleanup and Abatement Order No 5-00-707 EAI Proiect No 1232
4.0 REMEDIATION SYSTEM STATUS REPORT
Due to low concentrations of VOCs observed in the extracted soil vapor during the fourth
quarter 2002 and the first quarter 2003 quarterly system testing, the oxidizer was operated only
' 166 hours during the second quarter 2003 However, the air sparging compressor was operated
for approximately 1,071 hours alternatively for one week on the Wards site and then one week
on the Unocal site
On April 21, 2003, the oxidizer was restarted to obtain VOC readings from individual vapor
extraction wells (using an OVA calibrated to methane) and to collect soil vapor samples for
quarterly monitoring The field measurement data are compiled in Tables 5 through 7 Soil
vapor samples were obtained from the inlet of the oxidizer while being operated separately on
both the Ward and Unocal sites The samples were analyzed for TPH-G using modified EPA
Method 8015 and for BTEX and MTBE by EPA Method 8021B Only traces of toluene (0 18
ppmv) and total xylenes (0 37 ppmv) were detected in the extracted soil vapor The analytical
data and chain of custody are presented in Appendix C Due to low concentration of
hydrocarbons in the extracted soil vapor, no stack sampling was performed
Since starting the remedial system, the thermal oxidizer has operated for a total of 6,234 hours
and the spargmg compressor for approximately 12,000 hours, removing approximately 8,456
pounds of petroleum hydrocarbons from impacted soil and ground water (see Table 7) The
amount of biodegraded hydrocarbons is not included in this total and is difficult to calculate
EAI proposes to conduct field readings from individual wells and obtain soil vapor samples in
the mid-July Based on the results of this testing, a decision will be made whether to operate
the oxidizer The air sparging compressor will be kept operating on a continual basis
i
13HM WORD 1232RO351 -6- ENVIRONMENTALAUDIT INC
