(YVATC
predominantly south to southwest. A review of groundwater analytical data collected to date
indicates the dissolved hydrocarbon plume has been essentially defined in the south, and west
directions and is inferred in the north (upgradient) and east (crossgradient) directions. Even
though the plume boundary to the north is inferred, field observations and PID measurements
of the soil sample collected from boring SB-10 in the capillary fringe, and analytical data from
the soil sample analyzed from that boring indicate that groundwater at that location is likely not
impacted by petroleum hydrocarbons. A sample of the floating product from well MW-2 was
analyzed in January 1996 for a fuel fingerprint by Sequoia Analytical of Redwood City,
California, and the product was identified as weathered diesel fuel (Smith Technology, May
1996). Total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel (TPHd) was subsequently added to the analysis
suite in September 1996 and dissolved hydrocarbons the gas and diesel range have since been
detected in water samples collected at the site. Groundwater samples analyzed by EPA method
8260 have not detected the presence of methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) or other fuel
oxygenates above laboratory detection limits.
Free product was been monitored and removed from MW2 on a monthly basis from the time a
passive skimmer was installed in this well on June 27, 1997 until December 1999. Due to the
minimal amount of free product being recovered (<0.5 liters per quarter) in comparison to the
relatively large capacity of the skimmer's recovery reservoir (>2 liters), the free product skimmer
has been monitored only on a periodic basis and at minimum once per quarter, beginning in
March 2000. During the Third quarter 2000, a total of less than 0.1 liters of product was
removed. To date a total of approximately 17.04 liters of product have been removed from the
skimmer placed in MW2. A summary of product volume removed and previous product
analytical data is presented in Table 3.
During a project meeting on August 9, 2000, which was attended in part by Mr. Jeff Wong and
Ms. Margaret Lagorio of PHS/EHD, the need for additional subsurface characterization was
discussed in order to evaluate the site as.a candidate for No Further Action. PHS/EHD formally
requested this additional work in correspondence dated August 14, 2000.
SCOPE OF WORK
In brief, the scope of work will include the advancement of four additional soil borings at the
project site in an effort to determine the vertical and horizontal extents of petroleum
hydrocarbons at the site. Two of the borings will be placed where floating product was
observed during previous drilling activities to investigate the vertical extent of contamination
and to determine whether free product remains at the site. The two remaining soil borings will
be paced north and east of MW2 to define the lateral extent of petroleum hydrocarbons in these
directions.
92054.00WREPORTSMORKPLANDOC 3
