. FIELD PROCEDURES <br /> Site Safety Plan <br /> This plan describes the safety requirements for field work performed at the site The site <br /> safety plan is applicable to personnel of Smith Environmental Technologies Corporation who <br /> perform the field work A copy of the site safety plan is available for reference by appropriate <br /> parties during the work The onsite representative of Smith Environmental acts as the Site <br /> Safety Officer. <br /> Drilling Methods <br /> Before drilling begins, Smith Environmental notifies Underground Service Alert so that <br /> approximate locations of underground utility lines and structures can be marked The soil <br /> borings are started by hand-angering or probing to a depth of 3 to 5 feet to minimize the <br /> possibility of damaging underground utilities. <br /> Borings are drilled with a CME 55 or similar drill ng equipped with continuous-flight, hollow- <br /> stem augers The augers are steam-cleaned before use in each boring to minimize cross- <br /> contamination of the bonngs The drill cuttings are stored in Department of Transportation <br /> (DOT) 55-gallon drums or stockpiled onsite and covered with plastic pending disposal at an <br /> appropriate disposal facility. <br /> S-0 Sampling in Borings <br /> Soil samples for analysis and identification are collected at approximately 5-foot intervals from <br /> the borings during drilling. Soil samples are collected by advancing the boring to a point dust <br /> above the sampling depth and then driving a California-modified, split-spoon sampler <br /> containing clean brass sleeves through the hollow center of the auger into the soil The <br /> sampler is driven 18 inches with a standard 140-pound hammer repeatedly dropped 30 inches. <br /> The number of blows needed to drive the sampler each successive 6 inches is counted and <br /> recorded to evaluate the relative consistency of the soil Sampling equipment is cleaned <br /> between each use with an industrial non-phosphate soap and clean tap water. <br /> Soil Sample Labeling and Handling <br /> The soil samples selected for possible laboratory analysis are removed from the sampler and <br /> quickly sealed in their brass sleeves with Teflon tape and plastic caps The respective sample <br /> containers are labeled in the field with the ,fob number, sample location and depth, and date, <br /> and promptly placed in iced storage for transport to the laboratory. Chain of Custody Records <br /> are initiated in the field by the technician and accompany the samples to a laboratory certified <br /> by the State of California to perform the requested analyses <br /> SHELLSIFLDMTHDS doc 1 <br />
