SAFEWAY - <br /> Tracy Distribution Center <br /> Hazardous Waste Handling Training Acknowledgment <br /> Some products carried in our warehouse could be considered 'hazardous waste' if they are spilled, leaking, damaged or otherwise <br /> cannot be sold.These products cannot be thrown in the trash;they must be put in designated totes for pickup and properly disposed. <br /> These products that are considered 'hazardous waste' are typically Automotive, Cleaning, Laundry and Soaps, Floral, Beauty and <br /> Health Care and Pest:Control. <br /> IDENTIFYING:PRODUCTS THAT COULD BECOME HAZARDOUS WASTE(six categories,with typical examples) <br /> ❑ Corrosive Acids:Lime and scale removers,soap scum removers,some liquid toilet bowl cleaners, rinse aids for dishwashers. <br /> ❑ Corrosive'Base: Degreasing cleaners, bathroom cleaners with bleach, disinfecting cleaners, ammonia, solid and liquid drain <br /> openers. <br /> ❑ Oxidizers: Liquid chlorine,laundry bleach,hydrogen peroxide,pool chemicals,benzoyl peroxide,hair bleach products <br /> ❑ Flammable and;Aerosols: Lighter fluids, camping fuels,gas and oil treatments,fuel injector cleaners,isopropyl alcohol,extracts <br /> (vanilla,banana,etc.),and glass cleaners. Any aerosol can. <br /> ❑ State Regulated and Toxic: Laundry powders and liquids, hand soaps (solid and liquid), shampoos, dishwashing liquids, <br /> dishwasher detergents, cooking oils and motor oils. Insect repellents, mice or pest traps/bait, pesticides, brake fluid, <br /> antifreeze/coolant,windshield wash fluid,nicotine gum and patches,hair dyes/coloring. <br /> ❑ Universal Waste: Household and button batteries, lithium and Ni-Cad batteries, compact fluorescent bulbs, halogen bulbs (not <br /> including bulbs managed by the lighting contractor). <br /> CLEAN-UP OF HAZARDOUS PRODUCT SPILLS OR CONTAINER LEAKERS <br /> ❑ Dry products: Sweep up and place material and container in the designated plastic zip bag, seal the bag and write the product <br /> name ornthe zip bag with permanent marker. Place in the proper haz waste tote. <br /> ❑ Liquid spills::Soak up spilled material with absorbent, place in the designated plastic zip bag along with container, seal the bag <br /> and write the°product name on the zip bag with permanent marker. If there is residual product in the container it must be double <br /> bagged(see below). Place in proper haz waste tote. <br /> ❑ Leakers and residual liquid in containers(double bagging):Must be double bagged with the designated plastic zip bag. Place <br /> extra absorbent in the bag to soak up any liquid that may leak out. Place in proper haz waste tote. <br /> ❑ Wear Nitrile chemical gloves(and goggles if necessary)when cleaning up liquid spills. <br /> ❑ Place alLplastic zip bag(s)in the designated haz waste storage tote. <br /> SEGREGATION OF HAZARDOUS WASTE PRODUCTS <br /> There are 6 designated totes to segregate the hazardous waste based on its characteristics. Use product examples (above) or <br /> labelfingredient'key words(see below)to assist in the segregation process: <br /> ❑ Corrosive Acids—CA: Label Identifiers: Corrosive,vapor harmful, avoid contact with skin or eyes. Ingredient identifiers: Oxalic <br /> acid, glycolic acid,lactic acid, hydrochloric acid,gluconic acid. <br /> ❑ Corrosive Base — CB: Label Identifiers: Corrosive, danger, causes burns, avoid contact with skin or eyes, harmful or fatal if <br /> swallowed,with bleach. Ingredient identifiers:Sodium hypochlorite,ammonia,ammonium hydroxide,sodium hydroxide. <br /> ❑ Oxidizers — 'OX: Label Identifiers: Danger corrosive may cause severe irritation or damage to eyes and skim, harmful if <br /> swallowed. Ingredient identifiers: Sodium hypochlorite greater than 5%,hydrogen peroxide. <br /> ❑ Flammable and Aerosols— FL/AER: Label Identifiers: Flammable, combustible, danger, harmful or fatal if swallowed, contents <br /> under pressure. Ingredient idenfifiers: Petroleum distillates,isopropyl alcohol acetone,alcohol,methyl alcohol. <br /> ❑ State Regulated and Toxic—ST: State regulated(see product examples above). Toxic label identifiers:toxic,poison,harmful or <br /> fatal if swallowed. <br /> ❑ Universal Waste—UW: See product examples above <br /> ❑ Unknown—If you are still not sure which tote to place the product in, place it in the State Regulated and Toxic tote. <br /> STORAGE OF HAZARDOUS WASTE <br /> ❑ All designated chemical storage totes must have labels with the store number and address written on it. <br /> ❑ When material(s)are first added to the tote the date must written on the label(accumulation start date). <br /> The employee's signature below acknowledges they have received and understand that it is their responsibility to work safely and <br /> follow all procedures and rules outlined above and that if there are any questions regarding the Hazardous Waste Handleing,s/he <br /> should ask a Manager or Supervisor. <br /> Date Facility <br /> Employee's Name(Print) Employee's Signature <br /> I certify the above°named employee has been trained on the items indicated above,under my supervision. <br /> Trainers Name(Print) Trainers Signature <br /> Rev 4/30/11 Retain completed copy in employee's Safety Training file <br />
