cannot be sold. These products cannot be thrown in the trash;they must be put in designated totes for pickup and properly disposed.
These products that are considered 'hazardous waste' are typically Automotive, Cleaning, Laundry and Soaps, Floral, Beauty and
Health Care and Pest:Control.
IDENTIFYING:PRODUCTS THAT COULD BECOME HAZARDOUS WASTE(six categories, with typical examples)
❑ Corrosive Acids:Lime and scale removers, soap scum removers, some liquid toilet bowl cleaners, rinse aids for dishwashers.
❑ Corrosive'Base: Degreasing cleaners, bathroom cleaners with bleach, disinfecting cleaners, ammonia, solid and liquid drain
openers.
❑ Oxidizers: Liquid chlorine,laundry bleach,hydrogen peroxide,pool chemicals,benzoyl peroxide,hair bleach products
❑ Flammable and;Aerosols: Lighter fluids, camping fuels,gas and oil treatments,fuel injector cleaners,isopropyl alcohol,extracts
(vanilla, banana, etc.),and glass cleaners. Any aerosol can.
❑ State Regulated and Toxic: Laundry powders and liquids, hand soaps (solid and liquid), shampoos, dishwashing liquids,
dishwasher detergents, cooking oils and motor oils. Insect repellents, mice or pest traps/bait, pesticides, brake fluid,
antifreeze/coolant,windshield wash fluid,nicotine gum and patches,hair dyes/coloring.
❑ Universal Waste: Household and button batteries, lithium and Ni-Cad batteries, compact fluorescent bulbs, halogen bulbs (not
CLEAN-UP OF HAZARDOUS PRODUCT SPILLS OR CONTAINER LEAKERS
❑ Dry products: Sweep up and place material and container in the designated plastic zip bag, seal the bag and write the product
name ornthe zip bag with permanent marker. Place in the proper haz waste tote.
❑ Liquid spills::Soak up spilled material with absorbent, place in the designated plastic zip bag along with container, seal the bag
and write the°product name on the zip bag with permanent marker. If there is residual product in the container it must be double
bagged(see below). Place in proper haz waste tote.
❑ Leakers and residual liquid in containers(double bagging):Must be double bagged with the designated plastic zip bag. Place
extra absorbent in the bag to soak up any liquid that may leak out. Place in proper haz waste tote.
❑ Wear Nitrile chemical gloves(and goggles if necessary)when cleaning up liquid spills.
❑ Place alLplastic zip bag(s)in the designated haz waste storage tote.
SEGREGATION OF HAZARDOUS WASTE PRODUCTS
There are 6 designated totes to segregate the hazardous waste based on its characteristics. Use product examples (above) or
labelfingredient'key words(see below)to assist in the segregation process:
❑ Corrosive Acids—CA: Label Identifiers: Corrosive, vapor harmful, avoid contact with skin or eyes. Ingredient identifiers: Oxalic
acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, hydrochloric acid, gluconic acid.
❑ Corrosive Base — CB: Label Identifiers: Corrosive, danger, causes burns, avoid contact with skin or eyes, harmful or fatal if
swallowed,with bleach. Ingredient identifiers:Sodium hypochlorite,ammonia,ammonium hydroxide,sodium hydroxide.
❑ Oxidizers — 'OX: Label Identifiers: Danger corrosive may cause severe irritation or damage to eyes and skim, harmful if
swallowed. Ingredient identifiers: Sodium hypochlorite greater than 5%,hydrogen peroxide.
❑ Flammable and Aerosols— FL/AER: Label Identifiers: Flammable, combustible, danger, harmful or fatal if swallowed, contents
under pressure. Ingredient idenfifiers: Petroleum distillates, isopropyl alcohol acetone, alcohol, methyl alcohol.
❑ State Regulated and Toxic—ST: State regulated(see product examples above). Toxic label identifiers:toxic, poison, harmful or
fatal if swallowed.
❑ Universal Waste—UW: See product examples above
❑ Unknown—If you are still not sure which tote to place the product in, place it in the State Regulated and Toxic tote.
STORAGE OF HAZARDOUS WASTE
❑ All designated chemical storage totes must have labels with the store number and address written on it.
❑ When material(s)are first added to the tote the date must written on the label(accumulation start date).
