1714 Main Street
Escalon, California 95320-1927
Telephone: (209) 838-9888
Facsimile: (209) 838-9883
October 19, 2009
Workplan for Subsurface Investigation and Soil Excavation
Lionudakis Firewood, Inc. — 20541 McHenry, Escalon, CA
1.1 History and Release Discovery
An illicit discharge of diesel fuel to the storm drain system of Lionudakis, Firewood, Inc. (Site) was
reported to San Joaquin County in 2007. The alleged discharge was reported to have entered a
storm drain inlet located north of the above ground storage tanks (ASTs) and entered a storm water
basin. The ASTs are located on the west side of a 3.22 -acre parcel (APN 24712020) and the storm
water basin was located on the west side of a 9.63 -acre parcel (APN 24712008). A vicinity map is
included as Figure 1 and a site map is included as Figure 2.
The storm water basin previously located on the west side of a 9.63 -acre parcel (APN 24712008)
was backfilled and abandoned in July 2007. The effluent piping to the abandoned storm water
basin was removed and the storm drain system routed to a new storm water basin constructed on
the northern end of a 10 -acre parcel (24712006).
On September 2, 2009, the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department (EHD)
advanced three (3) soil borings (131, B2, and 133) within the confines of the abandoned storm water
basin. Ground Zero Analysis, Inc. (Ground Zero) reviewed EHD field notes. The field notes
indicated that the borings were advanced to 14, 20, and 16 feet below grade surface (bgs),
respectively. Soil and water samples were collected from the culvert (pit) located just south of
boring B2. The "pit" was the last catch basin in the storm drain system before storm water entered
the abandoned storm water basin.
Analytical results provided to Ground Zero indicate selected samples were analyzed for the
following:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg), diesel range organics (DROs), kerosene
range organics (KROs), and motor oil range organics (MORO) by EPA method
8015/8015B
• CAM 17 metals by EPA method 6020/6020A
• Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by EPA method 8260
G:IGROUNDZEIUONUDAKISIWorkPlanlWP Site Assessment and Remediation.doc
