Of these wells, only MW4 has ever shown a significant amount of
hydrocarbon contamination. The other wells provide an outer limit
to the hydrocarbon contamination on the site.
A ground water recovery system was placed into operation on May 13 ,
1991. The system was set to pump water from MW4 .
RAH drilled seven soil borings on November 28 , 1994 . Of the soil
samples from the borings, only those from SB1 contained detectable
amounts of hydrocarbons. No soil contamination was detected in
samples analyzed in the installation of the prior soil borings at
this site. The presence of hydrocarbon contamination in the sample
from SBI most probably results from its close proximity to the old
tank pit. Its location next to the fork lift shop precluded
drilling a conformation boring further from the tank pit in that
direction.
Selection of Soil Boring Locations
The three soil borings will be augured inside the forklift shop.
These boring will serve two purposes: they will help determine if
the shop will have to be removed prior to the next phase of
remediation, and to further define the extent of the soil and
ground water contamination.
• Drilling and Soil Sample Collection
The three soil borings will be hand augured using a 4 . 5" augur,
under the supervision of a geologist, working under C-57 license
#513857. The borings will be augured to a depth of 15 feet below
surface or the top of ground water. Representative soil samples
will be collected at five foot intervals, in 2"X6" brass sleeves,
with the aid of a hand driven slide hammer. After ground water has
been reached, the boring will be allowed to equilibrate and a new
disposable bailer will be used to collect a water sample from the
boring.
The augers and the sampling equipment will be washed with a TSP
solution between each sampling interval.
During the operations, the geologist will maintain a log of the
materials encountered. Soil samples will be field screened for the
presence of total volatile organic (TVO) vapors using a handheld
PID equipped with a 10 . 2 EV lamp.
• 2
