4.1 Soil Sampling
Soil samples *Trill. be collected .from borings, S-1 through B-4, by
driving a sampler containing vinyl acetate tubing using a power
probe. Soil samples will be collected at 5-foot interrais starting
at a depth of approximately 5 feet bgs and extend to a depth of
approximately 25 feet bgs- Additionally, soil samples will be
collected at lithalogic changes and at areas of ioil contamination,
The soil samples will be screened using a portable photoionization
detector.
The soil samples will be stored, in a chilled cooler containing
crashed ice for delivery to the laboratory. Strict chain-of-
custody protocols will be followed in all phases of sannple
handling. All equipment used during this investigation which
comes into contact with affected material will be thoroughly,
decontaminated before and after each Vise. This will be
accorrtp 3,i shed by washing with Xlcono.% fa laboratory-grade
detergent) and rinsing with d.eioni.zed, distilled, or fresh water_
The boreholes will be backfilled with neat cement grout upon
completion of the soil sampling activities. The neat cement will
be tremied from the bottom of the borehole to the top of the
borehole.
4 .2 Soil Vapor Sampling
Soil gas samples Evill b c.olleQcted from borings, SV--1 through SV--4 ,
within the vadose zone by driving a soil vapor sampler into the
ground using a power probe. Once . inserted to the dQsired depth,
the probe will be retracted slightly, which opens the tip and
exposes the vapor sampling ports. Soil vapor will be withdrawri
from the 1/8 inch nylaflow tubing, located down the center of the
probe, using a- small calibrated syringe connected via an on-off
valve. The first 5 dead volumes of gas will be discarded to flush
the sample tubing and fill it with in-situ soil vapor. The next 20
cc of soil vapor will be withdrawn ,in the syringe, plugged, and
immediately transferred to the mobile lab. fot analysis .
All equipment used during this investigation which comes into
contact With affected material will be thoroughly decontaminated
before and after each use. This will be -accomplished by washing
with Alconox (a laboratdry-grade detergent) and rinsing with
deionized, distilled, or fresh tater .
4
